Activists Uniting For The Benefit of Animals

Activism News

Wishing you and yours a Happy and Humane Holiday Season!
from all of us at ADAV/Stop UBC Animal Research.
(Please see attached!)

Thanks to your kind support, in 2013 we:

– brought two esteemed speakers to Vancouver – Dr Olivier Berreville – Canadian director
of InterNiche http://www.interniche.org – came in the early Spring to meet
with UBC faculty students, lecturing on developments in humane education
and travelling to UBC Okanagan to address social justice students; in September,
Dr. Ray Greek, founding president of the non-profit group Americans
for Medical Advancement http://www.afma-curedisease.org shared his message of
the lack of predictive value of animal experimentation with an appearance at
the Vancouver Public Library, an interview on CKNW’s Bill Good Show, and a
groundbreaking lecture on UBC’s Point Grey campus

– welcomed Dr. Andre Menache http://antidote-europe.org as our scientific
advisor. Dr. Menache is CEO of Antidote Europe, a scientific commission promoting
sound science. He welcomes your questions and comments on scientific matters – please
contact stopubcanimalresearch@gmail.org if you would like to learn more

– commissioned the brilliant cartoonist Dan Murphy to create “TRUISMS – That
Aren’t True”, a short film that skewers the notion that animal research saves
lives (in fact, all the great cancer-fighting drugs available today were
developed without animal research)

– presented a petition to President Stephen J. Toope’s office calling for an
immediate ban on the two most invasive and cruel categories of experiments
conducted on animals by UBC researchers. The petition has now grown to over
20,000 names, many of the signatures belonging to medical professionals

– hosted a popular interactive display at VegFest and had a hugely effective
weekend at PetExpo where attendees were surprised and saddened to learn the
extent of UBC’s emphasis on animal research. Our giant bus shelter poster of
a little monkey undergoing depression experiments proved a valuable public
outreach tool

– filed Freedom of Information requests regarding the shipment of non-human
primates into Canada: we have ascertained that 800 monkeys were imported to
Canada in just the first 6 months of 2013. Further details are being sought
to learn how many of these were destined for use in UBC’s controversial
neurological research

– created a number of provocative ads that ran in UBC’s leading paper The Ubyssey
in both the print edition and on their website (please see attached sample)

– challenged the Minister of National Defense to follow the lead of almost all
other NATO countries and end horrendous trauma training on animals – modern
simulators are more effective, cost-efficient and humane

– networked with other organizations to raise public awareness and engaged in respectful
dialogue with pro-vivisection representatives

With your ongoing support, 2014 will find us working even harder to alert the public to the ever-increasing use of animals in research, both at UBC and other institutions. Why not make it your new year’s resolution to get involved in whatever way you can. Help end the cruelty, not the research – let’s get the animals out of the labs!!

Stop UBC Animal Research is a community grassroots campaign that employs peaceful, legal, and compassionate approaches to educate the public about the grim realities of research on animals at the University of British Columbia and to ultimately bring about an end to research on animals at UBC. National shark fin vote!

On March 27 MP Fin Donnelly’s private members bill C-380 will be voted on by Canada’s MP’s. This bill would ban the importation of shark fins into Canada.
In BC we are focusing on three conservative MP’s who have stated they plan to vote against the shark fin ban. The more people who contact these MP’s the better chance we have to change their vote, it’s still possible!!
