BREAKING NEWS–VICTORY: GROUSE MOUNTAIN FUR-FREE AFTER VADL CAMPAIGN!

NEWS COVERAGE:
http://globalnews.ca/news/1068276/grouse-mountain-opts-not-to-re-stock-real-fur-jackets-animal-rights-activists-take-credit/

Grouse Mountain has removed all cruel fur products from its retail operations almost immediately after we announced an anti-fur protest for January 7, and following a months-long campaign.

On January 2, following a New Year’s Eve announcement of the protest, Grouse Mountain informed us that there is now “no fur on the mountain.” On January 3, we entered Outfitters and confirmed that the store is now 100% fur-free.

Prior to announcement of the protest, Outfitters had carried fur-trimmed Canada Goose and Parajumpers jackets. In October 2013, we transmitted email and voicemail appeals to Grouse Mountain in order to initiate dialogue, but Grouse ignored the appeals, compelling us to launch a sustained pressure campaign via social media, telephone and in-store presence. At one point, after an activist visited Outfitters and spoke with customers on November 11, Grouse summoned the RCMP, who handcuffed, detained and interrogated the activist.

Given Grouse Mountain’s iconic status, this is a keystone victory in the battle against the vile fur industry generally and Canada Goose in particular. We’ll monitor Grouse every week through the fall.

Grouse Mountain is the second Canadian retailer to drop Canada Goose’s fur products after VADL campaigns: Hills of Kerrisdale dropped Canada Goose and went 100% fur-free in winter 2012 after months of protest. Currently we’re also undertaking a fur-free campaign at Brooklyn Clothing.

SHARK FIN CAMPAIGN UPDATE

VADL activists have secured a meeting with the owner of Sun Sui Wah, to discuss an end to that restaurant’s serving of shark fin soup; stay tuned for the outcome. Meantime our Fintastic Friday protests will continue so long as Sun Sui Wah supports torture and extermination of sharks. Nine months of protesting under our belts so far!

EXCELLENT NEWS.

Business is obviously less than booming for Snowflake Furs after they downsized and shut down one of their stores.  Up until recently they had five stores in Vancouver, Whistler and Banff but one of their Banff stores is now shut down.

Alpine Start ‘Canada Goose’ fur trim campaign update.

We have decided to back off of Alpine Start until spring of 2014 after they committed to making changes in their store.  They have agreed to remove the Canada Goose window decals and work this winter to seek out fur-free alternatives to Canada Goose.  Alpine Start is on the same block as MEC and Valhalla Pure, which are both fur-free, so we are confident that a protest campaign would devastate them.  We have made it very clear that we will settle for nothing less than a fur-free policy, and have plans to contact them in March to discuss Fall and Winter 2014.

"Thanks for your continued support and motivation for us to stay current
with the ethical treatment of wild animals and the cruelty of fur sourcing.
Our decision is already made to support your cause - reduction of fur
products in our retail store. For a small independent store like Alpine Start Outfitters, immediate
elimination of a key category will hugely impact sales and this will surely
put us out of business unless we work on this with a long term exit
strategy - so we can gradually reduce the fur products and replace them
with other non fur products/ brands."

Our new fur target is Brooklyn Clothing company.
http://shop.brooklynclothing.com/

We approached the owner today, provided him with a fur trim information package and asked him
to put his hand in one of our leghold traps so that he could experience the entire reality of the
fur-trimmed products he carries. He did not put his hand in the trap, but he committed to researching
the issue and promised to respond to us soon. We let them know that we plan on protesting this
winter if they do not agree to go fur-free.

Please ask them to adopt a fur free policy.

Fintastic Friday Nights are STILL happening!

Please join us Friday nights at Sun Sui Wah, 3888 Main St, 6:30 till 8:30.

Check out this video of a 17 month old boy whose first words happen to be one of our shark fin chants.  His family lives 2 blocks from our demo location and his mother says he can’t even say daddy yet.  He and his brothers have been listening to our shark fin protests from their house for the last eight months and they love to join in once and a while.  Very cool.

Support Vancouver Humane Society Demo’s against rodeo cruelty at Calgary Stampede

People who care about animals will be holding demonstrations against rodeo cruelty at the Calgary Stampede (July 5-14). They need your help.
Every year, VHS makes headlines with its campaign against rodeo cruelty at the Calgary Stampede. We do what we can to draw attention to the issue through the news media, advertising, our website and social media. But there is a group of people in Calgary who are on the front-lines of the struggle to stop the suffering of rodeo animals and they are the unsung heroes of that struggle.
There is enormous peer-pressure in Calgary to support the Stampede and not to question what happens during the rodeo. But there is a small but growing number of Albertans who are willing to stand up to that pressure and make their voices heard by attending public protests against the rodeo. They come from all walks of life; from mechanics to filmmakers, from office workers to care givers. They are women, men, young, old, single, married – just ordinary people. But they share an extraordinary compassion for animals.

Last year the demonstrations in Calgary attracted the most support ever, with 55 people attending. This year, the protest organizers hope to build on that success – and they need your help. If you live in the Calgary area and you believe in kindness to animals, this is a chance to show you care and to make a difference. If you hate animal cruelty, don’t stand by and let it happen. Please help if you can.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.” – Anthropologist Margaret Mead
For information on how to join the protests against rodeo cruelty contact: lauraj4@shaw.ca

Protest dates and times:

Friday July 5th at 6pm

Saturday July 6th at Noon

Sunday July 7th at Noon

Friday July 12th at 6pm

Satuday July 13th at Noon

Sunday July 14th at Noon

National shark fin vote!

On March 27 MP Fin Donnelly’s private members bill C-380 will be voted on by Canada’s MP’s. This bill would ban the importation of shark fins into Canada.
In BC we are focusing on three conservative MP’s who have stated they plan to vote against the shark fin ban. The more people who contact these MP’s the better chance we have to change their vote, it’s still possible!!

THE MISSION:

We are declaring Saturday, December 22nd 2012 a National Day of Action Against Canada Goose, with hopes that thousands of animal defenders across the country will join us in calling out Canada Goose for the shameful role they have played in killing animals and popularizing fur.    Help us put a stop to animal cruelty by telling Canada Goose NO MORE!!! This is part of a much larger nation-wide action, so join us here in Vancouver to make some noise!  Our two main priorities for SHUT YOUR TRAPS! are to disrupt holiday sales of Canada Goose products, while drawing attention to the large and diverse network of people who oppose Canada Goose and fur/down.

December 22nd will be a historic day as animal defenders nationwide form a unified front against Canada Goose during the height of holiday shopping. Every person who participates, no matter how far away, will make a huge difference in our ability to reach people, media, and the companies who would otherwise get away with the wholesale slaughter of millions of animals. Fur Free Friday at Winners November 23, 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

  • With 213 stores Canada wide, most Canadians have no idea that Winners is one of the largest, if not THE largest retailers of cheap cruel fur trimmed products in the country.

WINNERS sells fur from many different species of animals like rabbits, mink and foxes and DOG FUR, ALL raised on cruel fur farms in several different countries including Canada, Netherlands, Greece, Finland and China.

*Winners has recently publicly stated that they DO NOT sell raccoon dog anymore but they are still selling it under th

e label raccoon which is a total lie and we intend to call them on it.*

When contacting Winners in the past regarding their sale of fur they have stated “as long as it is in style, we will continue to sell it.”

When a concerned customer contacted them in regards to a raccoon dog trimmed jacket they were sold and specifically told by Winners staff that it is FAKE FUR, their response was “well our staff are not experts on the subject.”

The problem is that many of Winners fur trimmed garments are not labeled as real so people who wouldn’t normally buy real fur are doing so unknowingly.

To send WINNERS an e-mail, go to this link http://www.winners.ca/en/contact.asp and click on their e-mail link.

Anti-fur Demo Nov. 4 Fur Bearer Defenders

Anti-fur demonstration/event…November 3… save the date! In unison with activists in Toronto, Fur-Bearer Defenders will be hosting a silent vigil in downtown Vancouver to raise awareness about the cruelties of the fur industry. This will be a highly visual event with a somber theme, so attendees are asked to dress in black or dark colours. All other material will be provided. I am helping to get word out about this and really want to have as many people as possible to attend. The more people there the stronger the message. There is power in numbers. An event page with more details will be available soon, but please plan on attending. Toronto will be hosting a similar event the same day. Feel free to write me with any questions.

Please Share this footage of three Animal Rights Activists being Branded by a hot iron in Tel-Aviv

HOT IRON SOLIDARITY: THREE ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVISTS BRANDED IN TEL-AVIV.

Today, October 2nd 2012, world farm animals day, at Rabin Square in central Tel-Aviv, animal rights activists performed an act of solidarity and empathy towards abused animals in factory farms. Three activists, one whom was flown from Russia, demonstrated in Rabin Square in Tel Aviv a common practice done towards innocent animals in factory farms all around the world. The display’s aim is to call for empathy towards the most oppressed sector of our society.
The activists got branded with a hot steel brand, in the same way farm animals are branded in factory farms. They were then rushed to Ichilov hospital to be treated for 3rd degree burns.
The Number 269, which was burned on their skin, was the designated number of a calf they have encountered in one of Israel‘s factory farms.
