Dairy Farmer profiting from Veal in Enderby?

Somebody forwarded us this message . . . .

There is a dairy farmer, at the beginning of Matthews road that is doing the most revolting torture of baby cows for veal profiting. He tears baby cows from their mothers, imprisons them in tiny pens, puts heavy chains around their neck tied to the ceiling that is very short, deprives them of their mother’s milk and feeds them only denatured grain so they become anemic to make the “meat” white. The pen is so short the baby cows cannot stand up and the chains so short they cannot move one inch to the left or right nor one inch foward nor backward. These babies are imprisoned like inmates in a maximum security prison held by chains around their necks until they are killed to make a profit for Davidson. His business is called J N J farm outside of Enderby.

EVERYBODY CALL THIS MAN AND TELL HIM WHAT HE IS DOING IS REVOLTINGLY BARBARIC AND REVOLTINGLY SAVAGE AND HE MUST STOP THIS NOW!!! He must be exposed. He does not want bad publicity. If people call and demand that he stop, he will stop.

Meet Spirit, a Husky from Costa Rica who needs to come to Vancouver, can you help?

Hey everyone, meet Spirit. She was rescued from a puppy mill here in Costa Rica that’s breeding Huskies, and as much as her caretakers have been trying to make life as comfortable as possible for her, the only way to stop her suffering from overheating, fleas, ticks and major skin sensitivities is to get her to a cooler climate that she is more suited for. We’re working to raise enough money to get her back to Vancouver with me in May so that she can get back to being a happy dog, and with your help we’ll be able to make it happen! Please share this fundraiser with your community and if you can, make a contribution. Every bit helps and will go to her transportation, permits, airplane fees and a kennel. Thank you for the support!! ♥ ♥ ♥ – with Tim X Rusmisel.

Monsanto versus Mother Earth

Dear Avaazers,

It’s unbelievable, but Monsanto and Co. are at it again. These profit-hungry biotech companies have found a way to exclusively ‘own’ something that freely belongs to us all — our food! But if we can pressure key European countries to slam the patent door shut on their destructive plans, we can stop this attack on our food. Help build the biggest food defense call ever by clicking here:

It’s unbelievable, but Monsanto and Co. are at it again. These profit-hungry biotech companies have found a way to exclusively ‘own’ something that freely belongs to us all — our food! They’re trying to patent away our everyday vegetables and fruits like cucumber, broccoli and melons, forcing growers to pay them and risk being sued if they don’t.

But we can stop them from buying up Mother Earth. Companies like Monsanto have found loopholes in European law to get away with this, so we just need to close them shut before they set a dangerous global precedent. And to do that, we need key countries like Germany, France and the Netherlands — where opposition is already growing — to call for a vote to stop Monsanto’s plans. The Avaaz community has shifted governments before, and we can do it again.

Many farmers and politicians are already against this — we just need to bring in people power to pressure these countries to keep Monsanto’s hands off our food. Sign now and share with everyone to help build the biggest food defense call ever:

Once a patent exists in one country, trade agreements and negotiations often push other countries to honour it as well. That’s why these food patents change everything about how our food chain works: for thousands of years, farmers could choose which seeds they’d use without worrying about getting sued for violating intellectual property rights. But now, companies launch expensive legal campaigns to buy patents on conventional plants and force farmers to pay exorbitant royalty fees. Monsanto and Co. claim that patents drive innovation — but in fact they create a corporate monopoly of our food.

But luckily, the European Patent Office is controlled by 38 member states who, with one vote, can end dangerous patents on food that is bred using conventional methods. Even the European Parliament has issued a statement objecting to these kinds of destructive patents. Now, a massive wave of public outcry could push them to ban the patenting of our everyday food for good.

The situation is dire already — Monsanto alone owns 36% of all tomato, 32% of sweet pepper and 49% of cauliflower varieties registered in the EU. With a simple regulatory change, we could protect our food, our farmers and our planet from corporate control — and it’s up to us to make it happen:

The Avaaz community has never been afraid to stand up to corporate capture of our institutions, from pushing back the Rupert Murdoch mafia, to helping ensure that telecoms keep their hands off our Internet. Now it’s time to defend our food supply from this corporate takeover.

With hope and determination,

Jeremy, Michelle, Oli, Dalia, Pascal, Ricken, Diego and the whole Avaaz team

Oil Spill in Athabasca River

For 10 hours last week, toxic tar sands waste from a Suncor operation poured into the Athabasca River. Suncor refuses to answer simple questions about what happened.
Call on Suncor to release basic information about spill and strengthen protocols to prevent future spills.

Last week, the pipes from Suncor’s operations froze and then burst, spilling 2,200 barrels of toxic tar sands waste into the Athabasca River for 10 hours.

That’s all the public, including the communities impacted by the spill know — because Suncor hasn’t bothered to release any information to us. This has happened before, and then, like now, Suncor refused to answer basic questions.

The public deserves answers to simple questions about the safety of Suncor’s operations and equipment. How exactly does a company let toxins spill into our rivers for 10 hours? How can Suncor not know what was in its own pipes? And if Suncor is not prepared for a frozen pipe in northern Alberta, what else aren’t they prepared for?

Tell Suncor to release details and pictures of its latest toxic spill.

Suncor has a history of withholding information from Canadians in hopes that they forget about spills. Suncor spewed toxic water in the Athabasca River for three days in 2011 and never even wrote a press release to warn communities about the spill. It was not until a report released by the Alberta government a few days ago that the public even became aware of the 2011 spill. The report states that more than 50 per cent of rainbow trout tested in the 2011 spill died.

Suncor’s latest spill is still fresh on Canadians minds, and by taking action now we can ensure that Suncor cannot hide from its responsibilities.

Communities and organizations have joined to demand answers. Suncor can start by answering these simple questions:

What time was the spill discovered?
Who first reported it?
What specific chemicals are in the pipeline?
How close was the pipe rupture to the Athabasca river?
When will they release pictures of the incident?
Together, we are standing up to big oil companies that think they can do whatever they want, regardless of the consequences. We’ve seen before how dangerous the tar sands are. We need to make sure that Suncor releases photos and details of the spill so communities can have the information they need to prevent any more harm from occurring.

Suncor: Stop hiding information about this spill. Strengthen environmental safety protocols.

Thanks for all you do,
Angus, Emma, and the team at
