Animal Torture Flourishing at UBC

The Canadian Council on Animal Care governs the use of animals in lab research in Canada and keeps the statistics on numbers used and the experimentation they are used in. According to the statistics for 2008, nearly 2.3 million animals were used in research that year, up from less than 1.8 million in 1998. Among these 2.3 million, 800,000 animals were exposed to experiments that caused “moderate to severe distress or discomfort.” Additionally, more than 100,000 animals (monkeys, cats, dogs, rabbits, rodents) were subjected to the highest level of invasiveness, involving “severe pain near, at, or above the pain tolerance threshold of unanaesthetized conscious animals.”
